Brief History of APHPN

The Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) is a professional association made up of physicians who, beyond their primary qualifications, have additional postgraduate training(s) in various aspects of Public Health/Community Medicine. The Association which started in Nigeria in 1974, was registered with Corporate Affairs Commission on 5th September, 2007 with CAC No 130088 and has a corporate office domiciled in the institution/establishment of incumbent National President.

The Association is open to all registered medical and dental practitioners in Nigeria with recognized post-graduate qualification in public health and/or community medicine. Membership is ordinarily acquired through the state branches of the association but in the absence of such a local branch, such persons may do so directly with the national body.

APHPN has six (6) categories of members – Ordinary Members, Fellow Members, Life Members, Senior Members, Associate Members and Honorary Members.

  • Ordinary members are registered medical and dental practitioners in Nigeria with recognized/registrable post-graduate qualification in public health or community medicine other than Fellowship.
  • Fellow members are medical and dental practitioners in Nigeria who have registrable professional fellowship in Community Medicine.
  • Life members are previously ordinary or fellow members who are 50 years or older, had continuously been financial members for at least 5 years and pay a lump sum membership fee of 10 years within one year of their application for such membership.
  • Senior members are fellow or ordinary members who have been financial members continuously for at least 10 years and are now retired from active service.
  • Associate members are medical and dental practitioners who do not possess registrable postgraduate qualifications in public health or community medicine but are in cognate public or community health practice and desire to be members of the Association.
  • Honorary members are men and women of distinction in medicine and dentistry or kindred sciences who are not ordinarily eligible to be members of the Association, elected by the Council of the Association and approved by the Annual General Meeting.

Members of APHPN work at all the three tiers of health care delivery in Nigeria and with international agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations. They provide promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health care services. Some members are also trained and skilled in health management, leadership and policy; and are involved in health policy formulation, program planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
